Professionally oriented higher education has long traditions in Denmark, but the sector in its present form is new as from 1 January 2008.

Professionally oriented higher education is offered at seven university colleges (professionshøjskoler) and two engineering colleges (ingeniørhøjskoler). The institutions offer basic, further and continuing education within the fields of health, education and didactics, engineering and business, social work education and creative education. University colleges are regionally based and cover considerable geographical areas. University colleges vary in size but all offer attractive study environments and learning opportunities for students and teachers. The institutions cooperate with regional employers to fulfill the short- and long-term needs of regional public and private employers.
